National symbols appeared mainly in decorative arts, which were applied to architecture, such as bas-reliefs, mosaics, or murals. They included images of animals (lion, sheep, eagle, bird, etc.) and fruits (pomegranate, grape or grape leaf, weed spike, etc.) having its ideological bases both in ancient mythologies and Christian tradition, originating in medieval bas-reliefs or miniatures. In some cases, swords and crosses also appeared, which referenced certain aspects or generalized history of the Armenian nation.
